Clean eating isn't just about food; it’s creating a lifestyle that supports your healthy food choices and focuses on health and wellness no matter how busy you are, how tired you get, how poor you are, where you go or what you do.

To be successful at this Clean Eating thing, it has to be a way of life - it has to be your priority, your focus, your passion no matter what. For that to happen; you need to be educated, organized, have a dedicated food budget that's manageable, be creative and last of all be motivated and inspired!

Here’s how you can do all of that so that Clean Eating is your way of life, your lifestyle, no matter what.

Educate Yourself About Clean Eating

The first thing is to understand Clean Eating and all it's benefits, learn why you need to stay away from all foods that are bad and what the good foods actually do for your body, health and well being.

Know the WHY about why you should be Clean Eating!

It's not so much about recipes here - there are some recipes and meal ideas, but the focus of my blog is to teach you the nuts and bolts of Clean Eating so that you can be armed with knowledge which will help you stick to it for the long term, improve your health and the health of your family and loved ones.   • Read Books and Articles: Invest time in reading other reputable sources on clean eating. Some names to research would be Barbara O'Neil, Medical Medium and Forks over Knives to get you started, a great book to really educate you is The China Study by T.Colin Campbell Ph.D

  • Watch Documentaries: There are heaps around these days. Documentaries like "Food, Inc." and "Forks Over Knives" or "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" that shed light on food production and the benefits of whole foods. Most documentaries point towards a plant based diet, but this blog is not about that - if you want to include meat in your diet, by all means do. "Eating Animals" documentary is one that you can check out.

  • Join Online Communities: Forums and social media groups focused on clean eating can be valuable for tips, recipes, and support.

  • Learn to Read Food Labels: Understanding food labels is crucial. Get into the habit of reading food labels before deciding to buy a product, if the label has wholefood, natural ingredients then it's ok to buy. Start understanding what ingredients mean - 'natural' colours .... are they? Corn syrup, glucose syrup, citric acid ... these ingredients sound ok but they're not, learn what ingredients the food industry is actually putting in your foods and what they do to the body. The best way to start is by only buying packaged food, dairy, non-dairy, meats etc with minimal and clean ingredients only.

Time Management: Fit Clean Eating into a Busy Life

Incorporating clean eating into your regular (probably already busy) life can be challenging, but it is possible with proper time management. Here are some strategies:

  • Meal Planning: This is a big one! Plan meals weekly, or at least have some idea of what meals you'll be cooking for the week. This saves a heap of time figuring out each night what to make and ensures you have all the necessary ingredients.   • Batch Cooking: Prepare meals in bulk or when cooking, cook extra to freeze into more meals so that you have healthy options available for when you're too busy or tired to cook. Not only will this reduce temptation for you to order takeaway or eat out but it also will save money - meals are already made and packaged! Just heat and serve!

  • Prep Ahead: Chop vegetables, marinate proteins, and prepare grains in advance. Store them in the fridge for quick assembly during the week. When prepping for one meal, prep extra veggies or foods you know you'll need for another meal coming up and store in the fridge.

  • Quick and Easy Meals: Have a list of go-to meals that are quick to prepare and cook on busy days. Think stir-fries, salads, creating new meals from leftovers, pasta dishes and crock pot meals.

  • Involve Your Family: Get family members involved in cooking and cleaning up. This is a great time saver and teaches kids some important life skills. With family members pitching in to help it can also help you bond more together.

  • Set Cooking Times: Decide how long you can spend preparing and cooking a meal in the kitchen each night, then find recipes to fit into those time frames. This will help to keep you from spending too much time in the kitchen.

  • Shopping Schedule: Have set days for grocery shopping and stick to them. Buy enough food to last you until the next time you plan to shop, this way you're not running off to the supermarket too often.

  • Avoid Unnecessary Purchases: Stick to your clean eating plan to avoid spending money on foods that don't support your health goals - it's tempting I know! Factor in some money for treats or eating out, this will help to keep you sane and keep Clean Eating to a realistic and achievable goal of sticking to it 80%-90% of the time.

Creative Thinking: Replace Unhealthy Favorites

Transitioning to clean eating can be a challenge and it's a good idea to try replacing your favorite unhealthy foods with cleaner versions so that you don't feel like you're missing out.

Here’s how to do it creatively:

  • Healthy Swaps: This is simply finding healthier versions of the bad foods you love. If you love hamburgers - make your own. Love chips? Make healthy ones! You can make cleaner and healthier versions of just about any junk food, takeaway food, cafe food, dessert etc out there. All you have to do is find the recipes or buy the cleaner alternatives.

  • Experiment with Recipes: Are there new recipes or foods you've always wanted to try? This is the perfect opportunity to experiment with new dishes and tastes - just make sure they're mostly made from fresh, clean and whole ingredients.

  • Explore New Foods: Try incorporating new, nutrient-dense foods into your diet. If you haven't tried different fruits, vegetables or grains - start exploring! Find recipes and meal ideas with foods you don't eat often or have never tried before.
